It seems to get worse for the men and women who served at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Now comes word that the veterans and their families are 70% more likely to get Parkinson’s disease than those who served elsewhere in the country.
Many camp veterans, family members, and workers have yet to file for the government-authorized payout.
Here is the most encouraging detail about getting the money, victims do not have to prove that the camp’s contaminated water caused their Parkinson’s. The Veterans Administration has said it will assume it is service-connected and provide benefits.
Now I am not saying collecting the money is easy. But a good lawyer can work the system. I have had a lot of cases where the government fought not to give money to injured people. This isn’t that type of case. Yes, you must do things right … but it is doable. Perhaps most important, you don’t have to look for the money. Congress has already set it aside.
Here is an additional fact, it doesn’t matter if the veteran has died. The family can still collect.
With Memorial Day here, please contact the folks you know who could be helped by this benefit.
There are restrictions, time limits, and all the stuff most cases have. But please don’t let any more time pass before you or those you know get legal help.
Over my legal career, I have helped many veterans. I feel it is my duty. Part of the reason I got involved with the Honor Flights celebrating survivors of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other military actions is that I don’t believe it is enough to say thank you, we need to show how appreciative we are for their sacrifices.
Enjoy the holiday, and I suggest that in the coming week, you do something to help a vet.
