Those highway safety rails you see across the Mobile area may be worthless if you have an electric car. What did you say?
Here is the shocking part: Electric cars would seem to be lighter since they do not have an engine. In reality, they are heavier—maybe thousands of pounds more than your gas-powered car or truck. Surprisingly and potentially tragically, the current highway safety rails may not be strong enough to stop these battery-powered vehicles.
In one test, the electric car crashed through the railing and didn’t stop until it hit a concrete barrier. In another, the electric vehicle lifted the railing, drove under it, and kept going.
Highway guard rails are designed to redirect a car back into its lane, preventing it from entering oncoming traffic, going off a cliff, or other dangerous situations. I help injured people all over the Mobile area, and I cannot tell you how many times I have seen those rails prevent a really serious injury.
Now, let’s talk about the legal side. If a safety device fails to protect you, who’s at fault? It could be the electric car manufacturer, the company responsible for the safety device, or even the government. It’s a complex issue.
My real purpose in telling you this is to warn you about the danger.
If some traffic experts are correct, half of us will have an electric car by the time our grandchildren learn to drive.
