Helping Veterans with a Special Court Here in Mobile

Nov 8, 2024 | FAQ | 0 comments

Question: I am very proud of my brother’s 20+ years in the military. He is now going to retire and move back to the Mobile area. What does Alabama do for veterans?

JASON: We are very pro-military here in South Alabama. Plus, the state has done quite a lot to provide a helping hand.

First, thank your brother for his service on behalf of all of us. Choosing a career that can place him in some of the most dangerous situations in the world deserves our deepest respect.

You might be surprised to learn that we have a special court system for veterans, known as Veteran Treatment Courts. These courts are primarily designed to assist with mental health and substance abuse issues. They operate with a more understanding approach, often leading to alternatives to jail or prison. The court can help with treatment, job training, employment assistance, and arrangements for housing/transportation support. Perhaps the best part is that if a veteran successfully completes the program, they can apply to have their charges dismissed, and their entire record expunged.

This year, ten new laws related to active service members and veterans were passed in Alabama. One of the most significant changes for active-duty members is that there is no state tax on pay received during overseas deployment. Additionally, there will be no state tax on the pay of National Guard and Reserve members while they are mobilized on the home front.

Another new law allows the children of military members to enroll in athletic programs even if they move to our state after the registration deadline.

Other benefits are available to veterans, including property tax exemptions, state tax relief, and assistance with education costs. Furthermore, a law has been enacted to protect veterans from eviction. As expected, all these benefits come with certain qualifications and restrictions.

One thing you may see a lot throughout Baldwin and Mobile Counties is the special veteran license plate. It is a way for Alabama to say we appreciate you. There is no extra charge for this plate.

Again, thank you to all the veterans. Have a great Veterans Day holiday. We are in your debt.
