Happy 2025! Well, you have some new laws to deal with — one I strongly support, one I don’t.
Here is the law you need to know about because if a cow sits on you – well, you’re in big trouble paying those medical bills. Here we go. You cannot sue the person who owns the bovine that hurts you. Seriously, this is a new law. Now, those bovines can do a lot of damage, and some of it to people like you and me. But the legislature says that if the owner puts up a sign telling everyone they are not responsible, you take all the risk.
I have to admit I had to look up bovine (ok, I googled it like anybody else), and it says: including cattle, bison, African buffalo, water buffalos, and the four-horned and spiral-horned antelopes. The legislature says they are unpredictable, and people need to be prevented from suing the owners for injury, loss, damage, or death of a person. So now, in our state, you are more legally protected from an elephant on Government Street than a milk cow in the middle of a rural road.
Here’s a new law I support. As of 2025, National Guard and Reserve troops on deployment will not owe any state taxes. It’s the least we can do for them.
Oddly, another new law includes no state capital gains if you sell precious metals like gold or silver. I would think that if you have gold or silver sitting around, you could afford to pay some taxes. But that is just speculation on my part.
Finally, a new law mandates that elected officials must undergo 10 hours of training on topics such as ethics and how government works. As I have heard some people say … it couldn’t hurt.
Happy New Year, y’all. I hope you have the best year ever.
