Labor Day is traditionally one of the most dangerous driving holidays in Alabama. Seriously, it can be rough out there.
If you have not noticed, the pandemic has changed a lot about being on the road. For example, a lot of people have not driven that much in the past 4 months. So, getting behind the wheel can be like learning to drive all over again. Need proof? Go on I-10 and you will see some very iffy lane changes.
I have handled a lot of car wrecks in my day. So as a reminder, here are some statistics that are worth remembering.
- You will be in a traffic accident sometime in your life. Statistically, you will be in 3 or 4.
- There are roughly 6 million traffic accidents each year in the U.S.
- On average, 40,000 people in the U.S. die in traffic accidents each year. That is 800 or so in Alabama alone.
- Every day in the U.S., more than 28 people die from alcohol-related accidents. That is every day.
- A texting driver is 23 times more likely to get in an accident.
- According to one study, eating while driving is more dangerous than talking on the phone.
So be careful. Have a safe holiday and look out for the other guy.
