Question: Thanksgiving and fires. Is that a real thing?
JASON: Thanksgiving is becoming a hotbed for blazes. See what I did there.
Now, I don’t want to make light of this, but home fires around this time of year have even gotten the attention of the American Red Cross. Yes, the American Red Cross, the folk who come in when you have no place to live … like after you burn down the house.
From my case files, here is what I think. First, more men are getting into cooking, and not all my fellow males know what they are doing. My experience is that low knowledge, subpar training, and inexperience will not stop many of them.
Deep frying a turkey is a growing problem. It seems every year, there is a news story about some guy setting his backyard, if not his house, on fire while trying to make one of those extremely delicious turkeys. Now, here is some legal advice: your homeowner’s insurance may not cover setting your house on fire, but the good news is that it will probably cover burning down your neighbor’s house.
How about staying inside your home? Trying your first turducken can also be dangerous. Here is some Red Cross advice for those new to the kitchen.
- Stay in the kitchen. Don’t leave cooking food. If you must leave, TURN OFF the stove.
- Things can catch fire. Keep paper towels, bags, and even curtains away from hot surfaces.
- Watch those clothes. Sleeves and other pieces of clothing can go up in flame. Think Mrs. Doubtfire.
- Keep a pan lid handy to smother flames. In fact, watch the movie Mrs. Doubtfire before you try anything new in the kitchen.
- Turn things off. Check all appliances before you leave the room and definitely before going to bed.
One last thought: test the smoke detector. I mean, really … test it before Thanksgiving. I’m just saying.
All the best this Thanksgiving. I hope it is full of joy and good food.
